Encaustic painting is fun and easy, using natural aromatic melted beeswax and oil paint mixed in for colour. A very friendly medium, the fast drying time allows one to create captivating works that will ignite their imagination. The warm liquid wax is applied to a wooden surface with brushes. Each layer is then gently fused using heat, resulting in a luminescent painting. Relax and be inspired while painting in a casual studio environment in the tranquil countryside. Create art in this exciting three-day intensive workshop set in the Distillery District, the heart of a vibrant Toronto art scene. Be immersed in art and culture while interacting with others. In this workshop we will work to create a textile assemblage, juxtaposing a number of different elements. We will work with textiles, handembellished or new, natural materials, such as sticks, stones, feathers and leaves, and found objects, such as buttons and scraps of metal. All of these elements combined create a unique and compelling piece of art that speaks of a new visual story. Instruction will be given in how to incorporate the different materials, how to create a strong composition, and how to embellish through wrapping and stitching wire. Participants will also be led through the process of finishing, mounting and framing the art piece, making it show-ready.

Materials to bring include natural materials, found objects, sharp scissors, and other sewing materials such as needle and thread, and if convenient, a sewing machine.

Collect stones, preserve leaves and sculpt branches to include, in your own unique style, a three-dimensional textile art piece. This workshop will explore how to bring subtle natural elements into focus with the colours, patterns and textures of textiles. It will focus on how to:
combine the subtle ancient colours of a stone with the exuberant colours of textiles
include the delicate fragility of a leaf with the strident strength of woven cloth
juxtapose the line created from a willow branch with that of a subtle pattern in fabric

The resulting art piece is subtle, compelling and mysterious, as a new visual poem emerges. Be the author of that poem.

Journey Through the Arts is pleased to be celebrating their 11th summer at the Old Art School (Molson’s Mill) in Port Hope.  Journey Through the Arts runs throughout July and August in weekly themed sessions.  Each week kids between the ages of 6 and 13 take part in music (guitar, percussion and song-writing), drama (improv, performance and script writing) and art (drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and more!) which culminates into a final Open House every Friday at 2:00.  During the Open Houses the kids perform the song they have written, perform the piece they have written and their artwork is featutred in an art show.
